Online journals are little filters that we each see every one else's lives through, the parts others choose to share with us. That said, we all think we are close, but really we seldom know *a lot* about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Good things:
-It was rainy and beautiful all day today
-Mom and Jack came to visit me today and we grabbed some groceries (YAY for luna bars and fresh organic spinach) on our way around town
- Mom brought me my cute summer clothes & returned with my winter cloths so now I have more space in my apartment!!
- Jen made ice cream cake and it was delicious!
- I called Sarah today and the music that played instead of the ringer was "Can't touch this" I laughed my ass off in the middle of a crowded hallway
- French discussion tonight was amazing - I quoted Eddie Izzard and everyone got it.

Not so good things:
-Amanda's not fucking working at the front desk next year, and I am so disappointed! I really wanted to work with her!!
- Tom is ill. Uncool! I want to fix it, but since I didn't have the correct qualifications for "G-d" I didn't get the job and can't fix a damn thing.
-I'm exhausted and have a paper due tomorrow.
- School is over in two weeks, and I am so. not. looking. forward. to. it.

If I get anything done today I would really like it to be cleaning my apartment and getting one load of laundry done. That's what I'd really like.

But so far today all I've done is drool over new albums (Andrew Bird's Armchair Apocrypha, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, and Bright Eye's Four Winds and Cassadaga). And I have absolutely no money to buy them. NONE. especially not considering all the birthday's that are upcoming and the awesomeness of the gifts that have been purchased. but, in all honesty, I'm much more excited to give gifts to people that I love then I would be to enjoy music that I'll obsess over for 2 weeks and then forget about. (see Iron and Wine's Sea and the Rhythm and Our Endless Numbered Days  that I don't ever listen to now). Also accomplished today; staring at my phone. Not actually doing anything with it.... just staring at it.

I'm moving into the dorm on Monday and then I'll start my week long search-for-a-job fest, before my 20th birthday party, which I am very excited for, having recently applied the final touches to my costume. (yeah, I'm having a Harry Potter dress up birthday party. You *say* I'm a dork but I can tell by your eyes you wish you'd thought of the idea first) The fist place I'm going to look for employment is the Starbucks by Best Buy, because they are all so damn nice over there, and I really enjoy working the coffee house scene. But before all this fun stuff happens I am having minor surgery on Tuesday for some unresolved pain issues that they don't know what causes. *sigh* Why can't I just curl under some warm blankets with my Maire Antoinette book, some hot coco and my puppy?

I'm finding that the most difficult decision about moving out is which book to take. Am I *really* going to finish Pride and Prejudice and wouldn't I have more fun reading the bio of Betty Friedan? I've wanted to read A Passage to India forever, but I can't take both Passage to India and Howard's End, because I won't want to read both. And I really should bring Jane Eyre but I'd rather take Women in Love. Apart from books, the second most important thing is figuring out which seasons of The West Wing are mine, and which are my mothers. I have a particular fondness for season 1, (Who doesn't want, No REQUIRE, Bradley Whitford in scruffy post-party hang over-ness to cheer them up?) but I also have a feeling it belongs (rightfully) to my mother. I have decided to leave my pirate hat at home, but I am going to bring my stuffed elephant, and the yellow elephant blanket my brother got me for christmas. I'll just hide them under the bed or something.

January 8th, 2007

With 20 some minutes left of the morning, I'm looking at my to-do list feeling a deep sense of non-interest. Having recently come into the possession of Marie Antoinette: Last Queen of France, all I really want to do is READ IT.

I'm thinking I should probably move into the apartment building the week before classes start, in order to get settled, find some form of employment, and mingle with the commoners. My mother has informed me that I will only be allowed to come home once a month, apparently she's concerned that I won't be as prominent on the social scene, but honestly, I think she's mentally linked the words "Social Scene" as a code word for grand children. I'm 19, and she's thinking about grand-kids. It's going to be a long decade.

So I'm going through old clothes, and figuring out which books I'm going to need on campus. I'm so ready to move out.... aren't I?

Because I'm starting at UW-L on the 22nd I've suddenly become extremely pensive and, if possible, more self conscious then before. I want to be liked, and I want to do well in my studies, and I want to possibly go through another semester of French without being terrified of the beautiful black woman who teaches it (To date all of my french classes have been taught by native speakers from Africa who are beautiful, black and have amazing fashion sense and vaginas coupled with perfectionists personalities they wish their students had, and if their students did not have said ideal personality these women forced it on them, by medieval methods if necessary.) Anyways, I'm really hoping that all goes well at UW-L, it's a bit daunting (like marriage), you THINK you want it, you THINK it's the perfect fit, but you've never tried it on, so is it?

So I'm spending my MONTH LONG (yes, it's amazing) winter break working at the coffee shop, studying french everyday for 3+ hours, watching M*A*S*H with my mother and little brother, and reading. Yes Ladies and Gentlemen, this is turning out to be the best winter break ever.

December 21st, 2006

School's out today for all the little kiddies, so Jack and I have planned a day filled with movie watching, play stationing and cookie making to start our holiday fun.

And speaking of holiday fun, for those of you who keep up with these things you'll be pleased to know that the seventh Harry Potter book title has been released!!!!! I, personally, was hoping for Harry Potter and Your Mom, while my brother was expecting something more along the lines of Harry Potter and How His Real Mother Came Back to Life. ehhh.... fortunately, neither of these titles were chosen and the seventh potter book will be called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow. Not exactly what I was expecting or maybe even hoping for but I'm certain that the title will fit the content.

alright my massive dork-y-ness will now be shoved back into the recesses of my hidden personality where it belongs. :-)

I'm feeling kinda tired, and rather sad. Can't really put my finger on it, but I could give you a round about picture of lost love and forgotten unicorns. Or not.

I had a meeting with a lady who talked to me about k-12 teaching, we decided that really wasn't for me. First of all, you need to be passionate about kids, not just the subject, and you also need to be willing to relocate, and I'm not really wanting to do that. Anywhere further away then five hours and I'd have a fit. I've pretty much decided to major in english with a writing concentration, but I'm starting to feel a bit insecure about it. Writing. I don't know that I write all that well now. I was ahead of the game in high school but all the other kitties are done being stupid. *sigh* They keep on telling me I can add literature to my daily life in any number of ways and I don't need to major in it. This is when it starts I guess. They tell you that you can't make money doing something that you love, and instead of saying fuck off, and doing what you want knowing that everything will work out, you agree and do something you only kinda like. It's all down hill from here.

Today when I was driving to school a man came on NPR, he was discussing cancer with mid morning host Carrie Miller. A woman called in to talk about the other side of disease; the care giver. She told this story about how her father had alzheimer's about two years ago. She had to move him from his house to her house in order to better take care of him. And she said it got to the point where, one day, he sat down with her and told her that this wasn't a way he wanted to live. He looked her in the eyes and told her the he was going to starve himself. He was still mentally cognizant and he knew what he was talking about, and she said 'ok'. And I was struck by the heartbreaking respect she had for her father in his intimate personal decision not to live with the disease. And suddenly I was crying, right there on the intersection between McDonalds and Barns'n'Noble thinking about my parents, and Jessie's parents and Erik's parents. And I was overcome by the tenderness of a daughter's love for her father in that she would allow him to make the decision by himself, and not fight him. There are a lot of arguments against what happened, but that's the point, isn't it. HE still made the decision. And I thought it was beautiful and wanted to share it with you.

This week was good; really, really good.

On Tuesday, I went to Stranger then Fiction with Ryan and Caleb, that old youth group gang from when I was like fourteen. I hadn't seen these kids in years and they look great, they're doing great and they are still hilarious. Caleb took off back to school tonight, but he says he'll call over christmas break. And Ryan isn't working on Monday so we're going to get together. (By the way, Stranger then Fiction is AWESOME. Will Farrel can act, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is probably the prettiest woman on the face of the earth. "Do you like the cookies?" "Yes, thank you for forcing me to eat them." And Emma Thompson makes a hilarious psycho...albeit uncomfortably believable.)

Thanksgiving proved entertaining and amusing. However, my family did decide to hold hands before the thanksgiving meal and sing the "johnny appleseed" prayer, which, when I'm looking at all the people I love and it's thanksgiving, and... well, I got a bit choked up, but I believe I hid it well enough although my aunts probably think I was suffering from pre-thanksgiving indigestion.

Afterwards I stopped off to see Jessie and her large and strange family. While I absolutely adore her siblings, their spouses, and her parents, I found her extended relations to be amusingly disconcerting. As Jess, Nate and I sat around discussing the finer points of a nice pair of socks a drunk (well at least, I'm hoping) uncle forcefully interupts us to say, in all seriousness "Excuse me! Are you speaking a different language?"

Afterwards Nate introduced many of us to the game Pit, which is loosely based on the stock market and is about as boring a topless keg party with free alcohol (okok, not that exciting). PJ promptly informed me that the premise of the game was all based upon deceit, so, of course, I would be winning single handily. I disagreed with mock indigence... however, my indigence turned to sheepishness when I proceeded to win single handily.

Now that it's getting to be winter I am really missing the city. I miss walking to class in the bitter crisp air and looking at the bare tree limbs and all the interesting people everywhere. Being able to walk in a mass of people gives you a sense of anonymity that I could never find here.

I'm also finding that I'm missing the people I knew up there as well. I was listening to bright eyes yesterday and I found that I was missing Rachel terribly. Some days Rachel and I did not get along, and we merely tolerated each other of out habit, but today, I miss her, and I want her to come back from Rhode Island and drink with me.

She used to giggle over the silliest things. When Tim came over to help me with my ipod he was saying the dumbest stuff. "you could name it UofMButt if you wanted to!" and Rachel was laughing with that high pitched joyous laugh of her's, and suddenly the stupidest comment was hilarious.

I have this mental picture of her swaying back and forth when she straightened her hair, singing along to Bright Eyes, and telling me that my voice was beautiful.

I'm really missing Sarah too. And it's funny, I distinctly remember the day we became friends. She was in my french class and we hadn't talked much, and one day she just stopped by my dorm out of the blue and she had just run up the stairs and was winded and unkempt, and I remember thinking "Who is this kid, and why doesn't she go away?" I'm so very glad she didn't.

When it had snowed and the world was looking brand new with a cleansing white coat of paint we went out and started taking black and white photos of the trees with snow stacked an inch high on the branch and the lamp light that caught the snow flakes when they fell. It was the first time I had really stopped to enjoy the beauty of campus, and we had so much fun wandering about enjoying the snow.

Funny, how you wake up one morning and suddenly miss people terribly.

Kick boxing beat the shit out of me yesterday. The instructor said that we wouldn't be sore. riiiiiight. As I literally rolled out of bed this morning and made a mental note that she's a huge liar.

Yesterday could have been awesome, and ended up being pretty close to it. Ryan stood me up again! Wait, it's not as bad as it sounds. We were off to Stranger then Fiction and I called to find that he wasn't picking up his phone. Turns out he'd be called into work on his first day off in a week and had forgotten to call me.

My french lesson was also canceled and admittedly, I wasn't prepared for it, but it is nevertheless exciting to be yelled at in french by a boisterious american who spends all day sorting books. so I was a little sad

So I called up Erik and we played with my brother for a couple hours. It was nice to see him without Amanda. I like Amanda and all, but he's my friend first you know? I don't know, maybe I'm being selfish.

Rudy Giuliani is filing papers to set up an exploratory committee to see if he has a bid for the presidency. I am really excited, and pretty surprised to. I really don't know much about this man, but he's a republican, however, he was mayor of new york city so he must be a cool republican. I must learn more.

Yesterday I played the cool older relation and took my 15 year old cousin Emily, and her (extremly cool) friend Rachel to a couple bookstores in LaCrosse and then to the Mall. Our main motive was Barnes'n'Noble, which, through the good will of the gods happens to be moving across the street to a larger more spacious building so almost ALL of their stock is on sale almost 90%. RAWK! Just to let you know, if you are on my christmas list you are getting a book.

My American Government class (yes, yes, that one I complained and complained about) is the coolest thing in the whole fucking world. Once again I've found a teacher whom I love and respect and admire. She's been everywhere, she attended Georgetown and worked for the BBC, she's been on Air Force One and will talk foregin policy for a half an hour even though we are suppose to be talking about the difference in the major parties. She didn't look at me like I was crazy when I confided in her that I am looking to go to Law School (most teachers get this giggle behind their eyes thinking "you are in technical college, go into management and shut the fuck up") In fact, she gave me really good advice and pointed me in the right direction.

I turned in my application to UW-L yesterday in person. I met a lady and when I asked the right questions she cheerfully gave me the right information. I'm setting up appointments with the pre-law guy and we're going to talk, I've made good impressions this far there is no reason why I shouldn't keep meeting people who like me and think I should go to their school.

Some unfun things that happened this week? Today, Mom ran over a frog with the mower and cut his leg off. He wasn't dying, just wiggling around in pain. Mom couldn't do it, so I took a shovel and finished it so he wouldn't be in pain anymore. I've never killed anything before today.

I hung out with Casey yesterday but I think he was intimadated by everyone and he wasn't much fun, which was disappointing.
